Attention to Detail

Every detail matters – no matter how small it is. The golf experience at a premier facility should be comprehensive. In addition to superb playability, the course should be aesthetically pleasing around every corner. Pat has a strong dedication to monitoring and caring for all details on property, from perfectly square tees to properly trimmed sprinklers to tree plans. It’s also key to understand the nuance and detail of the original design of the course, using this as a way to enhance master planning and tree management.

Leadership

Teaching is as much a part of the job as managing turf. Pat developed a unique standard operating procedure for his staff that is built around a team atmosphere and pride in the club. Communication is also very important to success as a Superintendent. From course happenings to staff meetings, clarity in the operation is critical to create pleased golfers and members, which is always the end-result to strive for in the industry.

Philosophy

MANAGEMENT

Stay calm and collected during stressful times; Quick and sharp in decision making process

Good listener to staff and membership; utilize “hands-on” style

Take time to teach crew; each person has a certain role but everyone should be trained to accomplish any tasked

asked of them

Believe in building a strong team; hire interns that will grow and become future assistants within club team

Communication with membership needs to be done on regular basis via course interaction, reports, presentations, etc.

COURSE CONDITIONS

Keep course as firm and fast as resources and weather allows

Aggressive with cultural practices, but will minimize disruption to play

Hand water greens to isolate water only where it needs to be applied

Attention to detail is critical to success

Provide challenging and enjoyable course set-up
